I visited Eddyville several years ago and what I saw was a town on its last legs. Even the local real estate office was up for sale. Eddyille did look marginally better this time. The Eddyville market underwent an amazing transformation in my absence. Several years ago the Eddyville market was a cluttered mess of a place. Today it is a nice, small market complete with sandwich counter. They also sell a number of locally produced berry wines. The store was clean and prices were very competitive. I should have taken a few pics inside the store. The Masonic Lodge. Eddyville has a park which is still nicely maintained. The statue commemorates the Civil War Dead. . A few of the names. This gazebo is very old. Glee's mom who is 94 years old remembers it from childhood. The park was the place to be on weekend evenings. Looking west, is the Iowa river. It is quite swollen compared to several years ago: This was around 2007 The native wildflower garden definitely needs tending. It is in dire need of being thinned out. The dedication to Chief Hardfish got moved off to the side as well and looks kind of cheesy in its new location. I would think the local high school art department could make some much needed improvements to the display. It would probably be cost effective as well. I remember last time I visited, I was curious as to who or what Grant Cowley was. Was it a person or a business? I decided to do a little research. It turns out Grant Cowley was a person, buried in the Eddyville cometary. If I make it through Eddyville again, I may have to see if I can locate the grave site. Grant Cowley among other things, was a mayor of Eddyville. Grant Cowley also had a horse ranch, and bred trotters. He also helped found a local bank. Grant Cowley was also involved in the building of at least one school. The invention of barbed wire was not looked upon kindly by horse ranchers in Iowa. This is a small sample of opinions about same. Anyway Grant Cowley sounds like he must have been an interesting fellow and he must have been one of the movers and shakers of his time. If anyone has any more info on Mr. Cowley, I would be happy to post it - giving credit where credit is due, of course. |
