Tropicana had a rough go of it this year but towards the end of the month it started coming back. Oklahoma (on the right) put on a show this month. Very impressive blossoms. |

Cassie and Darlow's Enigma put on a real show at the end of the month as temperatures dropped. |
Iceberg had a so-so year. The heat bothered it as well. I don't know what the purple flowers on the right are, but they are native and come on in late August / September. They add some nice color to the high desert.
Silverlace is quite popular this time of year with these wasps. It is also popular with quail and sparrows as an overnight roosting spot.
Butterfly Bush (Black Knight) is a good choice for this area, It can take the heat. The ground cover on the right does well in the heat if given a little shade, which can be a hard commodity to come by.
These flowers started blooming late August. Seems like everything was off by a couple weeks this year. |
Plant one six pack of Johnny Jump-Ups and you will have them for year. The tomatoes, while rather scraggly looking were good producers this year. We tried Roma this year and had mixed results. The early Roma's all got blossom end rot. The Romas that came later on in the season were picture perfect. Early Girl didn't put out a lot, but the quality was good. Pear and Sweet 100 stole the show.
Garlic Chives going to seed. Grapes going to wine.
Sprouts going to the dinner table | Flowers putting on a nice show. |
Oklahoma put out some nice blossoms once it cooled down. Well well, look to the left.
